Egypt Prepares For UN Climate Summit Amid Worldwide Weather Shocks.
Egypt, the host of COP27 in 2022, is pushing up steps to boost
the country’s environmental credentials and hasten its transition
to a low-carbon economy.
The event starts on Nov. 4 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
Several COP27-related activities are underway in Egypt,
including programs on sustainable mobility, waste recycling,
women’s health, the transition to clean energy, sustainable cities,
and water and agriculture adaptation measures.
Dr. Samir Tantawy, a UNDP climate change expert, states,
“The Egyptian Government acknowledges the great responsibility
of convening a successful summit” (UNDP).
“The conference must show climate crisis damage,
especially in underdeveloped countries.”
In southern Egypt’s Aswan Governorate, storms, snow,
and severe rain are new. Developing countries require compensation.”
Egypt is working toward a 2050 national climate policy that
reduces emissions in all sectors and adapts to climate change in agriculture,
water resources, coastal areas, and health.
Egyptian governorates are hosting workshops for
the Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Summit.
The national plan strives to bring civil society, the government,
and citizens together locally, regionally, and nationally.
Civil society organizations are holding workshops and seminars to promote
awareness of the summit and help Egypt accomplish its climate policy goals.
In preparation for the Climate Summit, the Red Sea Governorate is hosting
a series of events to raise environmental and sustainability awareness.
These workshops will continue until November’s Conference opening.
Egypt’s hosting of COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh is considered as
a tremendous opportunity to promote international climate action
and unify African and developing country aspirations,
especially regarding financing and adaptation to climate change.
