Maulana Tariq Jamil, a well-known religious scholar, is accused of hiding Rs49 billion in his bank accounts.
People from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and other groups said on social media that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had taken the money by freezing Tariq Jamil’s businesses’ bank accounts.
Yousaf Jamil, Maulana’s son, said that the news stories about his father’s bank account being closed are not true.
As soon as rumors about the alleged FIA action started to spread, a social media campaign was started against the cleric. People who didn’t like him asked him to tell them where he got his money.
A lot of pictures from Tariq Jamil’s trips abroad were used to criticize him.
Reports and rumors say that the government has frozen Tariq Jamil’s bank accounts, but no official statement has been made by any government agency.
