In Kyrgyzstan, Islamic groups and activism, especially those led by women, are becoming more important in the social world. Muslim women and the groups and communities they lead have an impact in many different fields, from charity to fashion. People often look at Islam in Central Asia through a small number of lenses.

First, Islam and Islamic groups, organizations, and parties have been studied and shown, most of the time as threats, from a security point of view.

Islam and Muslim groups in Central Asia, especially in Kyrgyzstan, also act as social actors and have social power, especially when it comes to women.

Recent studies have shown that Islamism and Islamic activism are becoming more important in welfare work, especially when it comes to giving people goods and services that the government doesn’t provide.
