Is It Permissible to Marry in Safar or Muharram in Islam?

Many people wonder whether it is allowed or discouraged to get married in the Islamic months of Safar or Muharram. Let’s clear the misconceptions based on authentic Islamic teachings.

Marriage in Safar and Muharram: What Does Islam Say?

There is no Islamic law that forbids marriage during Safar or Muharram or any other specific month.

The belief that these months bring bad luck is a cultural myth, not a teaching of Islam.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Do not revile time, for Allah is time.”
— [Sahih Muslim 2246]

This means blaming certain times (like months or days) is equal to blaming Allah, who created time itself.

Aishah (RA) and Marriage in Safar

When asked if marrying in Safar brings misfortune, Aishah (RA) replied that:

“The Prophet (PBUH) married me in the month of Safar, and I consider myself the most fortunate woman.”

This is clear evidence that there is no harm in marrying during Safar.

Importance of Marriage in Islam

Marriage is highly encouraged in Islam. It provides peace, comfort, and protection from sin.

“O Ali! Three things should not be delayed: the prayer when its time comes, the funeral when it is ready, and the marriage of a suitable partner.”
— [At-Tirmidhi 1075]

Islam promotes timely marriage and discourages unnecessary delays.

Understanding Muharram in Islam

Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam. It is a time of reflection and remembrance.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve… of which four are sacred.”
— [Surah At-Tawbah 9:36]

While it is a sacred month, there is no restriction on marriage during this time.

The Month of Safar: Myth vs. Reality

The pre-Islamic Arabs believed that Safar was a month of misfortune. Some Muslims unknowingly carried this belief forward. But the Prophet (PBUH) explicitly rejected this superstition.

“There is no bad omen in the month of Safar.”
— [Sahih al-Bukhari 5707]

Conclusion

It is permissible to marry in Safar or Muharram. There is no Islamic basis for considering these months unlucky.

Marriage is a blessed act in Islam, and delaying it due to myths is not advised.
