When Mahmud Effendi, Turkey’s foremost Islamic scholar and teacher,
died at the age of 93, his legacy will live on for generations.
When he died on Thursday, he had been in the hospital for two weeks for treatment of an infection.

Turkish province Trabzon is where Effendi was born and raised. When he was 10,
he became a hafiz. At the age of 16, he earned his madrassah ijazah after studying Arabic and Persian.

Ahiskali Ali Haydar Efendi
After meeting Ahiskali Ali Haydar Efendi in 1952, he became his murshid.
In 1954, Ali Haydar Efendi was appointed imam of the Smailaia Mosque and
served until his death. He took over the tariqa after the death of his mentor in 1960.
Teaching in Turkey for three weeks each year was a priority for him, and he also
made educational and missionary trips to places like Uzbekistan, India,
Germany, as well as the United States. Ruhu’l Furkan is the Turkish title of his Qur’an commentary.
As a result of his immense popularity, Sheikh Effendi has amassed a sizable
following and has founded numerously charitable, social,
and religious organizations such as the Ahle Sunnah Wal Jamaah Confederation and the Market
Association and Federation of Marifet Associations. Based on his convictions, he advocated service to others.
In 1996, he announced his retirement from the Ismailaga Mosque and remained low-profile for the rest of his life.
