West Bank: Palestinian health officials say that when Israeli troops entered a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank early on Monday, a fight broke out. Two Palestinians were killed, and one of them was a man who an armed group said was a member.

The two men died in the village of Kafr Dan, which is close to the city of Jenin in the north. The Israeli military said that they went into Kafr Dan late on Sunday night to destroy the homes of two Palestinian gunmen who killed an Israeli soldier in September during a firefight.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said that the people who died were 21-year-old Samer Houshiyeh and 25-year-old Fouad Abed. Samer Attiyeh, who runs the Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin, says that Houshiyeh was shot several times in the chest. Attiyeh said that Abed was 17 years old at first, but the ministry later said that he was 25.

Later, the Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades said that Houshiyeh was one of their members. The group, which is a branch of Fatah, the party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, put out an old photo of Houshiyeh with rifles. In a video shared on social media, his mother and other mourners watched as his body was wrapped in the flag of the armed group.

The West Bank and east Jerusalem had the most deaths in 2022 since 2006. Last year, Israeli troops went into Palestinian cities and towns almost every day and killed more than 150 people. Most of the Palestinians who have been killed, according to the Israeli army, have been militants. But young people who threw stones to protest the incursions and other people who were not involved in fights have also been killed.

During the Mideast War of 1967, Israel took over the West Bank, east Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. The Palestinians want these places for a future state.
