Important Dates And Events In Muharram, The First Month Of The Islamic Calendar

The Islamic month Muharram-ul-Haram is called the “Month of Sacrifice”

because it is when many important events in Islam’s history took place.

Even though most people know it for the history and story of Karbala,

many other things happened during this holy month.

Some of the events are based on religious texts like the Quran and Hadith,

while others are based on real historical events.

Some of Muharram-ul-most Haram’s important features are:

1st Muharram-ul-Haraam Day Of The Death Of Umar Farooq-e-Azam( r.a)

Sayyiduna Umar Farooq-e-A’zam, the second caliph, was buried on the first day of Muharram-ul-Haraam 24 AH.

(See “Faizan-e-Madinah Muharram-ul-Haraam 1439, 1440, and 1441 AH editions.”

2_Sayyiduna Adam (a.s.) And The 10th Muharram-ul-Haraam

Sayyiduna Adam (PBUH) was born on the day of ‘Ashura (i.e. 10th Muharram-ul-Haraam).

On this day, he was allowed into Paradise and his repentance was accepted.

(Mukashafah-tul-Quloob, p. 311, summarised)

Imam Hussain (ra), who was Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, was also killed in Muharram.

This is the most well-known part of Muharram because this is when

family members of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) were killed.

On the second day of Muharram, Hussain Ibn Ali (RA) went to Karbala and set up his camp there.

The forces of Yazid were all around him.

Shia Muslims especially mourn the dates of the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th of Muharram

because of what happened on those days.

For example, they were cut off from water and their night prayers, and then there was a fight.

People get together to remember Imam Hussain and the people who followed him and to be sad about their deaths.

In different Islamic countries, Azadari and Juloos are also held.

ASHURA Day

Another important thing that happened on Muharram was that Allah (SWT) saved the Israelites from Pharaoh on this day.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) told Muslims to fast for two days on the 9th and 10th of Muharram because of this.

Scholars agree that the fast can be done on either September 9 and 10 or September 10 and 11.

 IMAM ZAYN AL ABIDIN DEATH:

On the 25th of Muharram 95 Hijri, Imam Hussain’s son, Imam Zain-ul-Abidin, also died.

Shia Muslims think of him as the 4th Imam, so they are sad about his death.

DEATHS And BIRTH OF SUFI SAINTS:

Many important Sufi saints were born or died in the month of Muharram.

For example, Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar died in Muharram, and his Urs is held for 6 days of the month.

On the 20th of Muharram, the first leader of Islam, Bilal (RA), died.

Ashraf Jahangir Semnani, who was also a spiritual leader, also passed away in India on the 28th of Muharram.

Hazrat Amma Saheb Bibi Habiba Qadri also died on the 1st of Muharram,

and Khwaja Muhammad Sirajuddin Naqshbandi was born on the 15th of Muharram.
