Historic Mosque Shahi Masjid, a mosque built in the 1600s by Sher Shah Suri, was torn down in the Handia neighborhood of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The public works department in Prayagraj says that the mosque was torn down so that the G T road could be made wider.
The imam of the mosque, Md. Babul Hussain said that the case was set for January 16 in the lower court. But before it could reach the court, it was torn down.
After the Allahabad High Court turned down the petition to stop the plan to demolish in August of last year, the case was taken to a lower court of Historic Mosque Destroyed.
“We told the officials that the case was going to a lower court, but the mosque was still torn down,” Hussain was quoted as saying by Dainik Jagran about the mosque’s destruction.
The district administration and the government of Uttar Pradesh were criticized for the act in the widely circulated viral video by online users.
